About St. Mark's Episcopal Church
St. Mark's Episcopal Church is a warm and inclusive congregation on Milwaukee's Eastside. As a vibrant, diverse community we carry Christ's light to the world through acts of justice & love for neighbors and God's creation.St. Mark's is a beautiful church both within its friendly parish and aesthetic stature. The church is nearly 125 years old and of the Gothic-style with high-vaulted ceilings with wooden trusses. Stained glass windows line the aisles. Seating capacity in the church is 220, additionally, the chapel seats 20. Outside, cloisters enclose a courtyard garden. The courtyard is a peaceful, beautiful place beloved by many in the community.
Sunday service is at 9:30am. Sunday School is at 9:30am and offered to children ages preschool through grade 7. Throughout the school year, Sunday School meets during the first half of the 9:30am service, ending in time for the children to join their parents at Communion. Nursery care is provided for children too young for Sunday School.
All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion, no matter which church you might belong to. Following Sunday worship services, we gather for coffee, refreshments and conversation. Visitors are always welcome!
Our parish prioritizes the sharing of our time, talents and resources with individuals and communities in need. We have a number of community events, like the Downer Classic Corn Roast and the flower sale in spring and pumpkin sale in fall, where proceeds go to local and international non-profits. In addition, the J2A and Rite 13 youth groups participate annually in the local CROP Walk supporting hunger relief efforts and the Sunday School contributes to St. Marc's School in Haiti through the proceeds from their annual bake sale.
Our parish community continues to engage in acts of service toward our neighbors, such as the annual careers night at Our Next Generation, participation in Crop Walk, University Campus Ministry Lunch Bunch, St. Mark's day at the Gathering, and community organizing through Common Ground on issues related to affordable health insurance, education, and the foreclosure crisis.
St. Mark's Bistro meets on Thursday evenings and works to provide educational opportunities for the adults at St. Mark's that speaks to how we live as faithful Christians in the modern world. Whether the topic focuses on issues that are impacting our own community or whether we look at how the historical church and the saints are still relevant today; Adult Formation's mission is to help equip us with the tools to show God's love in our families, our church, our community and the world. Guests are invited to attend both the dinner (5:45pm) and program (6:15pm) portions of the evening. The program is free, but we request a donation of $8.00 to help cover the cost of dinner.
