Northbrook Church Statement of Faith
If you're wondering exactly what we believe at Northbrook Church, you've come to the right place. If you have further questions, any of our Pastors or Directors would be happy to talk with you.
Scripture
We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and the divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Matthew 5:18)
God
We believe in one God, creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These three are equal in every divine perfection. (Deuteronomy 6:4; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Hebrews 1:3;
1 Corinthians 8:6; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30)
The Father We believe in God the Father, who is true holiness, eternal power, infinite love and absolute truth. (Genesis 1:1; Leviticus 19:2; Romans 1:20;
1 John 4:8-9; Romans 3:26; Titus 1:2; Exodus 3:14)
The Son We believe in Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, who was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin, Mary. He died on the cross as the sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Furthermore, He arose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven, where at the right hand of God, He is now our advocate and High Priest, and in the person of the Holy Spirit, indwells the believer. He will return in glory to judge the living and the dead. (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25; 1 Corinthians 15; Hebrews 7:25; John 1:3-14; Romans 3:24-25; 1 Peter 2:21-25; Acts 1:9-10; 1 John 2:1-2; Matthew 25:31-41)
The Holy Spirit We believe in the Holy Spirit, whose ministry it is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and to convict, regenerate, seal, indwell, guide, instruct and empower believers for life and service. (1 Corinthians 12:12-14; Ephesians 1:13-14; John 16:8-13; Romans 8:9; Titus 3:5; Ephesians 5:18; 1 John 2:20-27)
Mankind
We believe that man was created in the image of God, chose to sin and is, therefore, spiritually dead. Only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can he obtain salvation and spiritual life. (Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 2:17; Genesis 3:16; 1 Corinthians 15:21-22; Romans 3:9-23; Ephesians 2:1-9; John 3:36)
Salvation
We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the
only grounds for the justification, sanctification and glorification of those who
believe, and that all who thus receive Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit and
become children of God. (Ephesians 1:3-14; Ephesians 2:4-10; Titus 3:4-8; Titus 2:14; John 1:12-13; John 3:16-36; John 5:24; Romans 5:9-10; Romans 8:1; John 3:3; 1 John 5:10-14; 1 Peter 1:23)
Ordinances
We believe that water baptism and the Lord's Supper are commanded by our Lord Jesus and are, therefore, to be observed by the church. They are not, however, to be regarded as means of salvation. This church shall practice believers' baptism by immersion. (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:38; Acts 8:12; Acts 8:35-38; Colossians 2:12; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29; Romans 6:1-14)
The Church
We believe that the true church is composed of everyone who has been regenerated by the Holy Spirit through saving faith in Jesus Christ, who is its Lord and Head; and that God has called His church to worship Him, to disciple believers, and to proclaim the Gospel to all the world. The local church shall be composed of members of the true church. Every local church has the right under Jesus Christ to decide and govern its own affairs. (Acts 2:41-42; Romans 12:5; Ephesians 1:22-24; Ephesians 3:21; Ephesians 4:11-13; Ephesians 5:23-24; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Acts 14:27; 2 Timothy 2:2)
Death
We believe that it is appointed unto man once to die, and after this, judgement
will occur. We also believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer
to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, and of the unbeliever to
judgement and eternal separation from God.
(Hebrews 9:27; Matthew 10:15; Matthew 12:36; Matthew 25:31-46;
1 Corinthians 15:22-25; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Malachi 3:18; John 5:28-29;
Revelation 20:4-6; Revelation 20:11-15; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)
Christ's Return
We believe in the personal and imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that this has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer. (Mark 13:32; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; John 14:3; 1 Corinthians 15; Revelation 1:7)
