Service Times

As of May 30th, we are returning to in-person worship (weather permitting).

Worship will be held outdoors at 11am in our picnic shelter, and the surrounding lawn. The picnic shelter is behind the church.

You may want to bring a chair, hat, and sunscreen. Masks are still encouraged.

An email will go out each Saturday indicating whether we are doing outdoor worship or just a livestream video, based on the forecast. Contact Annie Collins, the church secretary, at [email protected] if you would like to be added to our email list.

No matter the weather, we will broadcast the service to Facebook every Sunday and you can access the video below. We look forward to worshiping together this summer!

About Staunton Church of the Brethren

  • The Staunton Church of the Brethren has to be the most hospitable, friendly church I have ever attended. These people know how to make you feel comfortable, and it’s genuine. They clearly live out the faith that's in them. That’s one of the things that attracted me to the congregation as pastor, and I’m sure it’s one of the things that you'll remember when you visit us. You’ll want to come, again and again, as you get to know people and share the way of Christ with us. When people ask me to tell them more about the Church of the Brethren, my response is that you need to just come and spend some time with us.

    Our Beliefs

“For the glory of God and my neighbors’ good” was a motto of the early Brethren. The Church of the Brethren traces its roots back over 300 years to eighteenth century Europe. The early Brethren shared many beliefs with other Protestants, but focused on peaceful action, plain and compassionate living, and a shared search for truth. Still today, we turn toward God in devotion and toward our neighbors in service. Learn more about our beliefs through the Church of the Brethren welcome site.

    Our Mission

We are a Body of Believers who acknowledge salvation by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. We are a congregation under the authority of the Scriptures and in the heritage of the Church of the Brethren. We seek to proclaim by word and deed the saving acts of God's love. We desire to be open to the Holy Spirit's working and guidance in our lives. We endeavor to encourage the personal development and spiritual growth of all who share in our life together. We strive to serve lovingly our neighbors, our community, our nation, and the world in the manner exemplified by Christ.

Children and Youth Activities

  • The Staunton Church of the Brethren offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for all ages. Sunday School meets from 10 to 10:45am. We also hold Vacation Bible School each summer.

    Children

Children's safety is very important to us. For more information, review these resources:

    Child Protection Policy
    Caregiver Agreement
    Caregiver PowerPoint

All caregivers complete a child protection training course through Virginia's Department of Social Services.

Child care is provided for the 11am-12pm worship hour for newborns through age 4. All children are invited to participate in worship.

    Birth to 2 Years: Nursery

Christian Education at Staunton Church of the Brethren begins with our youngest children! A nursery is provided for infants and children through age 2. Our infant nursery has recently been remodeled using no VOC paint and easy-clean flooring for optimal air quality and a healthy environment for our infants. Our paging system lets parents know that they’ll be called if their children need them.

    Ages 2 to 5: Preschool

The Preschool Class is for children ages 2-5. Our preschool play room is available during worship for children ages 2 to 4. This is a safe, creative place where children can explore and play. A favorite spot for the children is our play house area, where appliances, dishes, and play food invite children to cook and create. Children can participate in a variety of activities and learn at the same time! Activities such as our pegboard teach colors, shapes and promote fine motor skills. Books and our puppet theater encourage verbal skills. Of course, there are plenty of activities for active play too! Our paging system lets parents know that they’ll be called if their children need them.

    Kindergarten to 5th Grade: Multi-Age

Children ages 5 to 11 enjoy our Multi-Age Sunday School class, where they learn a great deal from activities the leaders coordinate, and from one another.

    Children's Church

Children participating in the Multi-Age Sunday School class before worship can also take part in "Children's Church" during worship. Children sit with their parents during worship until the children's story and then proceed downstairs to the Children's Church room downstairs (look for the painted palm tree outside the door!) Bible stories are taught through active learning, including skits, crafts, games, and videos. Music and bell practice are sometimes part of the hour. Children's church meets September through March. We take off the first Sunday of each month to worship with our church family. We also do not meet during the month of December.
    Youth Group

Junior and Senior High youth meet for Sunday School each week and Youth Group periodically. Youth also participate in church and community activities like Church of the Brethren work camps, National Youth Conference, service projects, and more. We just like to hang out and have fun- come see what we're all about!

Sunday School: 10am Sundays in the youth room upstairs by the balcony... where the ping pong table is.

Junior Highs are studying LIVE, a curriculum exploring conversations about following Jesus, developing healthy spiritual habits, and leading a life of service to others. Topics include The Whole Story, God Is..., and more!

Senior Highs are studying LIVE, a curriculum exploring high school issues. The theme this year is Hello, My Name is Jesus. Topics include Friends and Family, Culture, Questions of Jesus, and more!

Ministries

Community Activities

  • Local Outreach

We support the ministry of SACRA, the Staunton Augusta County Relief Association. The organization seeks to meet the needs of local residents who need assistance with food, rent, heat, etc. We also support the work of the Valley Mission in Staunton, helping the homeless, providing food and clothing and basic needs. In addition, we also give to Beverly Manor Weekday Religious Education in Staunton.

    Youth Work Camps

The Church of the Brethren sponsors work camps every year for junior and senior high youth, and young adults, all over the country. These week-long trips give young people a chance to work to benefit others as well as give a cross-cultural experience in many settings. These are often life changing experiences, which give youth the chance to give back to a community and learn more about the unique needs of those they serve.

    Disaster Relief

Each year we have a group from the church that goes to a Church of the Brethren Disaster Response Mission Site and donates a week of labor and time to improving the living conditions of others. Our groups have been to Louisiana and Mississippi several times, and to Indiana in the aftermath of flooding there. The Shenandoah District and the Church of the Brethren Disaster Response Ministries cover most of the expenses and materials. We provide help in groups of 12-17 people.

    Fill the Cart

The First Sunday of each month is “Fill the Cart” Sunday. We have a shopping cart outside of the sanctuary and we fill it with non-perishable foods for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank every month. We also try to meet the needs of residents at the Valley Mission on the third Sunday of each month. We collect toilet paper, towels, and other personal care items for the residents of the Valley Mission shelter. Join us in supporting those who have special needs on our community.

    Home Repair

We have been working with a local group called Rebuilding Together doing home repairs for those who need assistance. The mission of the group is to provide needed repairs and modifications for elderly, disadvantaged, and disabled homeowners of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County in order to provide more accessible and safe living situations. There are many opportunities for this kind of work in our area.

    Fundraisers

We do several fundraisers and special offerings each year for special projects, including Heifer Project International, the Global Food Crisis Fund, and uniforms and school supplies for children in Mexico. Each January the Staunton Church of the Brethren Choir joins the Olivet Presbyterian Church Choir to do a Twelfth Night Concert to raise funds for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank as well.

    Equal Exchange

We maintain an Equal Exchange products station in our church lobby. Here you can purchase coffee, teas and chocolate that are marketed using fair trade practices. Equal Exchange strives to build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, to foster mutually beneficial relationships between farmers and consumers and to contribute to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world.

    Support

We also support the following organizations in their outreach and mission work:
Church of the Brethren | Shenandoah District of the Church of the Brethren | On Earth Peace
Bethany Theological Seminary | Bridgewater College | Brethren Woods | Bridgewater Retirement Community
