About Northwood Christian Church
-
Springfield First Christian Church made plans to plant a new Disciples of Christ Church in Springfield, Oregon in 1961. Sherman Moore was called to be the organizing pastor of the new church, the first of 11 pastors to serve at Northwood. The charter for Northwood Christian Church was signed on January 18, 1962. The Commissioning and first worship service was held on January 21, 1962. Frank Betzer was called to be the pastor in August 1962. For the first two years, members met for worship at Page Elementary School.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the church building were held on September 15, 1963. The first service was held in the new building on January 12, 1964.
In the 48 years of worship in this building, Northwood has gone through six phases of building: initial construction, added pastor’s office and entry; updating the original sanctuary; remodeling entry way, restrooms, and offices; building a sanctuary and remodeling the fellowship hall; and building the classroom wing, fireside room, and kitchen, and remodeling the old classroom wing.
As Northwood begins another 50 years, our purpose is the same: love God, love people, share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. Connect, Grow, Serve, Go.
