About First Baptist Church
WHAT WE BELIEVE....about God.
We believe there is one Living and True God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit).
about Jesus Christ.
We believe that Jesus Christ was begotten of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, and is truly God and truly man- that as such, He lived a perfect and sinless life. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice; and that all who believe in Him are justified on the sole basis of His shed blood. We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into Heaven, and in His presence there as our High Priest and Advocate and the only Mediator between God and man. We believe in the promised personal and bodily return of our Lord Jesus Christ to set up His kingdom upon the earth whereby we shall reign in righteousness and justice eternally.
about the Holy Spirit.
We believe that salvation is by grace through faith and that all who receive, by faith the Lord Jesus Christ, are born again of the Holy Spirit, thereby becoming children of God in which the Holy Spirit then becomes resident.
about the Bible and its use.
We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, inerrant in its original writings, consisting of sixty-six books in two parts- the Old and New testaments; that the Bible is spiritually inspired by God and is the supreme, total and final authority in faith and for life.
about Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
We believe that two ordinances are ordained by God- Baptism and the Lord's Supper- which are divinely enjoined upon all Christians and that, without merit in themselves, they provide an expression of faith by means of the believer's identification and fellowship with Christ in remembrance of His death on the cross. We believe that Baptism by immersion is the true scriptural baptism and that this baptism is designed to signify the fact of our death to sin and our resurrection to a new life of holiness and submission to Christ. We believe that the Lord's Supper (or Communion) is a commemoration of Christ's dying love for us and that it symbolizes the fact that the believer is continually fed and nourished by Him. In its observance, the Lord's Supper is placed, in order of importance, after baptism to be in accord with its symbolic and historic order as recorded in the teachings of the New Testament.
about the human condition.
We believe that man was created in the image, and after the likeness, of God; that he willfully sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also a spiritual death in that he became separated from God; that all humans are born with a sinful nature whereafter, in the case of those reaching the age of moral responsibility, all become sinners in thought, word and deed.
about the purpose, place and mission of the Church in today's society.
We believe it is our responsibility to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the preaching of the Word of God and through witnessing within the community of friends, relatives and acquaintances in our daily walk and, by extension, to the entire world via support of missions and by charity and outreach. We covenant to uphold one another in prayer, to do our best to meet each other's needs and to study, worship and fellowship together to grow in Christ and in obedience and service to Him. Our love for Jesus Christ draws us together in Spirit and truth and prepares us to reach out to the lost and needy with a primary goal of winning them to salvation in Him.
about the role of the minister.
We believe the minister's role is to preach the entire Gospel and lead the body of believers in worship, obedience and praise to God through the enabling of our Lord Jesus Christ and the divine guidance of the Holy Spirit; to assist each believer to develop his or her full potential and maturity in service to Christ; to offer counsel and guidance to those seeking help with personal problems; to foster a climate of love and acceptance; and to lead individuals and the corporate church body to submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ as the head of the Church and personal Lord of life.
about the role of the laity.
We believe it is the laity's responsibility to fully support, share in and work cooperatively with the minister in all aspects of the Church's ministry; to do so through the spreading the Gospel beyond the walls of the Church by witnessing of the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Word; by demonstrating Christ's love in meeting the spiritual and physical needs of the local community and others around the world; through prayer and continuous reading and study of God's Word; and by discipling, nurturing and encouraging each believer to faithfulness and Christian maturity.
about our commitment in support of American Baptist Churches, USA.
We believe primarily in the autonomy and independence of the local Church and that we are not answerable to any outside ecclesiastical body except by our prior consent. However, we recognize the need and benefit of cooperation with our sister American Baptist Churches of New Jersey and the American Baptist Churches/USA including their local and regional representatives to achieve ministry objectives not possible solely through independent Church resources and efforts. To that end, we pledge to cooperate with and support, to the extent attainable and in agreement with our beliefs, programs and objectives of the American Baptist Churches/USA and its subsidiary organizations and representatives. This includes continuing financial support as approved in our annual Church budgets and the sending of representatives to key meetings.
about our relationship to the ecumenical witness.
We believe it is important that we share in the cooperative witness of the Christian Churches in our local area by means of holding joint services to promote fellowship and the celebration of our common beliefs. We also strive to participate jointly in community programs and campaigns that focus on meeting the needs of the disadvantaged and suffering among us.
about our responsibility to evangelism and support of missions.
We believe that one of the most important responsibilities of our Church and each individual member is to proclaim the Gospel of salvation through belief on the Lord Jesus Christ and faith in His Holy Word. To that end, we seek to be a witness to the lost in all walks of life starting in our homes, community, family and places of work and extending throughout our Nation and world by support of missionaries and mission programs. We also believe it is important to regularly facilitate the opportunity of public acceptance and personal testimony of the occurrence of salvation in Christ by encouraging those motivated to accept Christ to come forward in our worship services and Bible/Sunday School sessions.
