About Heartland Community Church
-
Heartland Community Church, Lawrence, KS, was started in September of 1991 by about 15 people whose desire was to help non-churched, pre-Christians experience the life-changing power of Jesus Christ and to then live in a biblically functioning community. The founders' goal was to share Christ's love in a practical and tangible way to people in their own community who were far from God.
The LORD has blessed their efforts over the years in mighty ways! Heartland's small initial core quickly outgrew the home basement setting in which they first met. Subsequent moves to a theater, upstairs dance studio, and former commercial dry cleaning facility were excellent rental homes for nine years. In 1999 as the five-year lease expired on Heartland's rented building (which the church was rapidly outgrowing in terms of Sunday School space), God provided a wonderful opportunity with a downtown commercial building that the church bought and remodeled.
This location at 619 Vermont street currently houses the 200-plus (and rapidly growing) congregation and a myriad of Heartland ministries serving the Lawrence Community. Heartland's mission is: To Love people so they will love God and love people!
