About Grant Street Church of Christ
Our MissionGrant Street Loves the New Testament Church
It is our mission to be completely identified with the church of the first century. To accomplish this, we must be guided by the doctrine of the word of God, which is contained in the New Testament. Jesus declared doctrine as, “the seed of the kingdom” in Luke 8:11. A fundamental truth in life is, that a specific seed will produce when planted and will always produce after its own kind. We plant the word of God in the hearts of honest people and they through obedience become Christians. GOD ADDS THEM to His church just as He did in the first century. Since we are guided by the Word of God, we accept no man, or group of men as having authority to legislate for the church. The head of the Grant Street church is Jesus Christ, Ephesians 1:22. Like the churches established in the first century, we are an independent congregation located in Decatur, Alabama that is striving to grow under the authority of Christ. Elders were appointed at Grant Street early in the 1900s to look after the spiritual needs of the congregation. Men that met the qualifications outlined by the apostle Paul in Titus 1:5-9 and I Timothy 3:1-7. These men have the responsibility to “feed the flock” with the spiritual food found in the scripture, as well as being living examples for others to see, I Peter 5:1-3. Therefore, we are not governed by doctrines or creeds generated by man. but are bound by and ruled in both faith and practice by the Bible alone.
While carrying out our mission,” seeking the lost and serving the saved” we recognize the principles of the Old Testament and we seek to conform to the patterns identified in the New Testament. When the Bible speaks on any subject, we accept its words as final. We plead and pray for unity among all New Testament believers in the same manner as Christ. Unity and love were marks of first century discipleship; they are marks of the Grant Street family today.
Grant Street Loves the Truth
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free” Jesus said as recorded in John 8:32. In John 14:6, Christ spoke these words, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” We believe all truth can be found in the word of God. He also stated, “If you love me you will keep my commandments.” We diligently strive to know, love and live the truth as found in God’s Word.
Grant Street Loves Families
History has proven that stronger families make better churches and a healthier community. As we walk down the road of life; sorrow, joy, tragedy, jubilation, fear and hope, our families must be a foundation that sustains. The first institution established by God was the family, even before He established the church. We are seeking to grow stronger families through leadership seminars, summer lecture series, gospel meetings, vacation bible schools, workshops, retreats, youth programs, family programs and fellowship activities.
Grant Street Loves our Community
The physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the people of Decatur are one of our deepest concerns. We lend assistance to those who have emergency needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. One of our ministries includes a large benevolent program which provides support to individuals, families and children’s homes.
Grant Street Loves People
Most of the people in our world live in spiritual and physical poverty. Out of a profound sense of gratitude for the many blessings Grant Street has received from God, we practice, “it is more blessed to give than receive.”
