Mass Times

Public Masses have now resumed at the Cathedral:

Weekend Masses:
Saturday: 5 PM
Sunday: 8 AM, 11 AM, 5 PM

Daily Mass:
Monday- Friday: 8 AM and 12:05 PM
Saturday: 8 AM

The obligation to attend Sunday Mass continues to be suspended due to the COVID19 pandemic. If you do not wish to come in person, please remember you may watch and pray along with our televised Proclaim Mass.

When you come to Mass in-person , please adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Everyone (over three years of age) must wear a mask and observe social distancing.

2. We have marked eighty “socially-distant” seating locations in the cathedral. Spouses and families living in the same household are invited to come to Mass and sit in one of these marked locations.

3. On weekends we are asking that you call the rectory in advance to let us know that you are coming, and we will reserve a spot for your family group. Please call 536-0117 or contact Father Jim at 934-9605. This last number accepts text and voice messages. You may also e-mail Father Jim at: [email protected].

4. Only those with advance reservation will have admission for weekend Masses. (No reservations are needed for daily Mass.) When any Saturday or Sunday Mass reaches safe occupancy limits, you will have first access to Mass the following Sunday. On weekends our ushers will help each individual or household group to find a seating location. Click here for more Detailed Instructions on Procedures in Church as We Reopen.

5. We will continue outdoor distribution of Holy Communion for those unable to attend Sunday Mass. The distribution will be 12:30-1:15 PM each Sunday in the parking lot of our Activities Center.

Our 11 AM Sunday Mass will continue to be broadcast each week. It appears live on at 11 AM, on WATM ABC 23 in Johnstown and on Cornerstone TV Faith and Family Channel in Pittsburgh.

The Mass video is then rebroadcast at 9 PM Sunday on Atlantic Broadband Public Access Channel 9 in Johnstown, and repeated on the Faith and Family Channel at 6 PM Wednesday and at 4 PM Thursday.

About St. John Gualbert Cathedral

  • Many of you who are visiting this page already know Jesus, and are familiar with the precepts of Christianity. If, however, the language of formal "doctrinal creeds" seems a bit strange or foreign to you, please be reassured - your uncertainty, doubt and skepticism are openly received here at St. John Gualbert Cathedral in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. As an expression of that welcome, we have outlined below some of the core concepts of our faith, in order to provide you with some simple reference points as you visit among us. We hope these will be 'conversation starters' and that you will halp us move the Christian conversation forwards.

We believe that the true church comprises all who have been justified by God's grace through faith alone in Christ alone. They are united by the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, of which He is the Head. The true church is manifest in local churches, whose membership should be composed only of believers. The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord's Supper, which visibly and tangibly express the gospel. Though they are not the means of salvation, when celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the believer.

About Religious Liberty: God alone is Lord of the conscience, and He has left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men which are contrary to His Word or not contained in it. Church and state should be separate. The state owes to every church protection and full freedom in the pursuit of its spiritual ends. In providing for such freedom no ecclesiastical group or denomination should be favored by the state more than others.

About Salvation: We believe in salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ; that this salvation is based upon the sovereign grace of God; that it was purchased by Christ on the cross; that it is received through faith, apart from any human merit, works, or ritual; and that salvation results in righteous living, good works and biblically informed actions to bring about godly justice wherever we live.
